As a brand a lot of research goes into colour and what we choose to add into our collection of Onkaparinga bedding and homewares.

Each year professionals from around the world gather to share research on colours and the impact they have on people, they chat about trends and new materials that can impact change in the popularity of a colour collection, they strategise about what colours will be the ‘it’ colours of the season and how it determines us.

In many industries, including ours the colours we choose for our collections are often decided very much ahead of any new colour trends hitting our shores.  When you see a new colour added to a collection or a new product, the colour of that product has often been determined 12-18 months in advance, it has been specifically chosen after hours of research by our design team right here in Australia.

The research that goes into each collection of Onkaparinga homewares and bedding is a fun but painstaking process and takes our talented team hours of research for each item.  The decisions are made based on research that was once based on scientific evidence of the impact of colours on a person as well as forecast trends.

With all of our products being designed in Australia we often find our product development team pouring over images of homes and homewares from all over the world.  With Europe often being the forefront of design change our team visit at least once a year to scour trade shows, suppliers and prowl the shops for inspiration on what is to come in the latest fabrics and colours in the following year to Australia.

Our complete collection of bedding has been designed by our in-house team in Melbourne.

Our team will often design a collection of homewares or bedding that coordinates beautifully with each product in that collection through a whole complimentary colour palette, making choosing items a pleasing experience for the senses and easy to create a cohesive relaxed look in your home.

Colour is a way of communicating to a person beyond words and so colour forecasting is an important step in the process of developing product for Onkaparinga.  After being renowned for beautiful bedding for 150 years, our team is still building collections to remain one of Australia’s favourite bedding brands.

Long before they reach the time when they are available to ‘add to cart’ each design is carefully curated to meet the expectations of our valued customers.

Eighteen months before the product launch date

At least eighteen months before a bed linen set reaches the first happy purchaser, our research & development team is traveling the world for inspiration.  This inspiration is brought together for our entire collection, swatches, images from magazines, inspirational images from around the world, colour pallets, ideas all put together in a series of mood boards to set the scene and get the feeling of what will be ‘the look’ of the season in twelve months’ time.

Twelve months before the final designs are ready to ‘add to cart’.

With mood boards prepped by our development team, the development of what you see each season begins with the textile design team.  We see images coming to life on screens, we see colours changes, we see sketches come to life…we see the season that will be come to life.

Six months before ‘the arrival’.

The final designs are chosen and we begin to see the quilt cover sets and sheet sets arrive as the first samples.  They are spread across the production tables and viewed with fresh eyes, every aspect scrutinised.  Each colour is checked and changed if need be, every button checked, every piece of the collection examined together and as a stand-alone piece.

Our bed linen is viewed, tested and sampled meticulously until we are proud to add the piece to our bed linen collection.

Renowned for beautiful bedding since 1869, we will add nothing less to our collection.

The excitement begins, the word spreads.

As the full collection comes together the word begins to spread, new seasons quilt cover sets, sheet sets and accessories are on their way.  For a select few, the designs are sighted.  Magazines, influencers and the photography team are briefed on what is on its way.

The creative team work on styling and photography, the marketing team get ready for launch day.

And the new season styles are available, they are in shopping carts, they are in the glossy magazines, they are splashed across social media…and we are already eighteen months ahead, getting excited about what you will see from us for the next eighteen months!

Knowing a product has been tested gives you peace of mind the product has been tested for harmful substances and your family is sleeping with only the best. Look out for products with the below logo included on packaging or check product descriptions to ensure you are purchasing Oeko-Tex standard products.

To become RDS certified, the entire process from farm to manufacturer have been certified by auditors and inspectors from a third-party certifier.  RDS certified down and feathers are clearly marked during the manufacturing process to ensure no non-RDS feathers and down are mistakenly used.
